Located in the City of Weston, this renovation project completed in 2023, consists of a complete architectural remodel and reimagining of landscape, while preserving existing Live Oak and Sabals to provide a beautiful sanctuary for the new homeowners both inside and out. The landscape architectural design for their home melds the subtle formality of modern hardscaping with the contrasting textural plantings of soft grasses, brightly colored herbaceous wildflowers, and woody shrubs. Inspired by the beloved family’s vacations to Napa Valley, the property’s planting palette utilizes thirty-four (34) Florida native plant species alongside regionally appropriate accents (Bay Rum and White Tabebuia) and a fruit tree (Loquat), as well as herbs for the raised kitchen garden, to achieve the desired look reminiscent of their travels, while being grounded in a landscape that feels like Florida. Careful attention was paid to appropriate plant material for the lakefront and site orientation, biodiversity to increase wildlife and pollinators, and a thoughtful consideration to seasonality. A signature Red Maple in a sea of native grasses anchors the rear yard adjacent to a seating and firepit area for those cooler fall and winter evenings of family gatherings. The preservation of the existing tree canopy and extensive root systems of new grasses and shrubs will assist with stormwater runoff, especially along the northern property line adjacent to the lakefront. Reduced lawn and appropriate placement of plant species allows for the opportunity of the required irrigation system to be dialed back, or zones completely off, once established because of the high drought tolerance of the native plant material to aid with water conservation.
