A View From Both Sides of the Street

“So you’re going to sit in a parking spot?” Yeah, it does sound a little weird; and that was the question I was most frequently asked when inviting locals to come experience the 2013 PARK(ing) Day FTL.

As a spectator at last year’s PARK(ing) Day FTL, the concept at the time was foreign to me as well. But it all made sense once I was there appreciating the outdoor spaces that had been designed. I enjoyed meeting neighbors within my community and seeing what others had created in an area typically occupied by parked cars. You quickly forget that you’re sitting in a parking space and it begins to feel like you’re relaxing with friends in their backyard.

After recently joining Cadence, I was excited to hear that they would once again be hosting their 3rd annual PARK(ing) Day FTL. This year, I would have the opportunity to be a part of the dedicated and talented team who puts this all together. What I witnessed behind the scenes is that a great deal of thought, work and devotion goes into just a few hours of enjoyment. But the satisfaction of seeing residents of our community interacting with one another makes it all worth it.

For me, there’s a reward that comes with trying to make your little corner of the world a better place to live. I share the ideals held by Cadence that well planned and inspired tactical urbanism projects, such as this one, promote a sense of unity and bring together and strengthen neighborhoods and communities.
