All wrapped up for the holidays
In 2013, stripes of color may have momentarily caught your eye while driving down Andrews Avenue in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The candy-cane trees that lined the 400 block of N Andrews all began with a solo tree in 2012. This was a Cadence team group effort to bring a little holiday fun to the front of the office. The “yarn bombed” tree was a neighborhood fascination and sparked the idea and desire to fill the street.
Last holiday season, we decided it was time for Cadence to creatively reclaim the street once again and put a unique spin on holiday cheer in Flagler Village; this time temporarily transforming the whole Avenue into a holiday streetscape for the community to enjoy. Putting a request out through social media, we were astounded by the response we received from locals wanting to help. From knitters to neighbors to friends, locals showed us that they care about creatively giving back to the community and selflessly volunteered their time.
The yarn wrapped trees were more than holiday decorations. The trees represented what can happen when you bring the community together and give them a greater sense of pride and place in their neighborhood. By changing a single element, you’ve added vitality and a conversation piece that enhances the pedestrians experience. Even though those who came out didn’t know each other, they all had something in common. They laughed and socialized and shared in our interest to revitalize the street and to build a stronger community. The trees hopefully inspired passerby’s to look up and enjoy some holiday cheer.
Due to popular demand, Cadence is excited to announce that we will once again bring Holiday Yarn Bombing to Andrews Avenue. This year’s street tree takeover will be held on Saturday, November 29th, 2014 as part of our neighborhood’s monthly Artwalk.
We are seeking 20 volunteers to help spread holiday cheer and to transform the trees on the 400 Block of N. Andrews Ave. To thank you for your assistance, winter brews will be served and a few reindeer games may ensue.
