The exploration-based project coming to Flagler Village

www.mockingbirdtrail.com

The creative opportunities in Flagler Village continue to grow for Cadence. We are excited to announce our latest community driven project. We’re partnering up with our friends at Flagler Garden and Girls’ Club to bring our neighborhood a project that creatively connects the neighborhood residences, local wildlife and tourists along Fort Lauderdale’s first urban art trail. At the end of May 2014 our team was awarded the 2014 Art of Community Initiative, a grant by Community Foundation of Broward.

The Mockingbird Trail is an exploration-based project that will engage the community in the process of place-making. The artist-designed Northern Mockingbird sculptures will be thoughtfully placed throughout Flagler Village, Fort Lauderdale to promote habitat awareness, walkability and neighborhood identity. Please stay tuned as our team refines the project schedule, embarks on raising matching funds, and seeks out community members for input.

Kick-off Meeting

Friday | August 22nd, 2014

The official kick-off for the Mockingbird Trail project was held on August 22nd with the Art of Community Ensemble – Flagler Village Community GardenCadence and Girls’ Club. The meeting was filled with a creative vision and eagerness to bring these ideas to life. Mockingbird Trail will demonstrate how essential the arts and well designed public spaces are to retaining and attracting community.

What’s next? The artist selection and preparation for the first community workshop.

Artist Selection

Friday | November 14th, 2014

The Art of Community Ensemble met to discuss and review potential artists for the project. The artist selection was curated by Girls’ Club’s, Sarah Michelle Rupert with the notion that the artist should should possess experience in public art installation, demonstrate comfort in fabricating pieces with exterior grade material, and a receptive mindset to the community engagement process. The Ensemble is pleased to announce the addition of artist and sculptor, Valeria Yamamoto! Valeria joins the Art Ensemble and will become an integral part of the team. Our collective focus will be on the cultural vitality of the trail’s existence.

About the Artist:

Valeria Yamamoto is a Japanese-Argentinian artist, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has studied and worked in the field of Graphic Design. She moved to Miami, Florida in 2001 where she replanted and followed her dream career as an artist. She gained her BFA in sculpture at Florida International University. Yamamoto’s work has been shown in several exhibitions throughout galleries and museums in the United States, including the Frost Art Museum, Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, and Art Vision Gallery. One of her large sculptures has been selected for the Third Biennial Sculpture Exhibition in Chattanooga, Tennessee and 10th Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition at the Polk Museum of Art in Winter Haven, FL. Locally she recently participated in SCOPE during 2014 Art Basel and her sculptural work can be found in Intracoastal Park, Miami.

What’s next? Artist introduction meeting and project orientation.

Artist Kick-off Meeting

The meeting ended with an on-foot exploration of the neighborhood to immerse artist Valeria Yamamoto into the project’s surroundings.
